Due to
the collapse of the economy the military’s combat readiness was
drastically compromised: salaries were not paid on time, POL is
short, and equipment is not being maintained. Several years will be
required to rebuild the forces.

One of the Brigades is referred to
as the “Mechanized Brigade”.
Zimbabwe Defense Forces are under the command of the President, who
is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Forces. The
Minister of Defense who is responsible for the administration and
logistical support of the defense force, and the Command of the
Defense Forces, currently General Constantine G Chiwenga, who
maintains operational control of the Defense Forces through the
Defense Forces Headquarters in Harare, assist him. Subordinate to the Defense
Forces Headquarters are the Commander, Land Forces, and the
Commander, Air Forces.
Army headquarters is under the command of Lt. General Philip Velario
Sibanda, Commander, Land Forces, who is assisted at Army
Headquarters by a chief of staff who has subordinate to him the Army
Staff. The Army
consists of the chiefs of staff for operations, administration,
procurement, and logistics.
The 32,000 strong army of Zimbabwe is divided into six brigade
headquarters, four of which are based on geographical areas; the
fifth is an elite unit based in Harare. Other operational forces
include a mechanized brigade, and an artillery brigade. The bulk of
