Congo, Democratic Republic
Background
As part of
the move toward a government of National Unity, in 1999 the DRC was
divided into 8 Military regions, apportioned between the government
and opposition groups. In 2003 the MRs were expanded to 10 and some
were renumbered, which is why our list is different from some
others. The below reached us end-November 2004 and was current as of
mid-2004.
1st
MR Kikwit, Bandundu
2nd
MR Matadi, Bas Congo
5th
MR Mbandaka Mbuji Magi, Kasai Orientale 6th MR Lubumbashi,
Katanga
7th Kinshasa, City of Kinshasa
8th
MR Goma, North Kivu
9th
MR Kisangani, Orientale Provinceamina
10th
Bukavu, South Kivu
[1] Of these about 50,000
belong to the government forces, which might have peaked at
95,000 during the civil war. As always, given the civil
wars, ration strength and actual strength are two different
figures.
