NoteThe Revolutionary War army had two types of regiments. The Continental Regiments were the equivalent of today’s regular army volunteers, even though they were recruited locally. The sole true mixed regiment was the 1st Continental. The Militia Regiments were state forces serving for 4 months at a time, and usually conscripted. They can be compared to today’s National Guard. Generally militia protected its own state, but could be ordered elsewhere to serve with the Continental Army.
The Continental Army as approved for 1776 was to consist of 20,000 men in 27 regiments, each of eight companies. Regiments were numbered according to the seniority of their colonels. Details can be found at www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/revwar , the site for the US Army’s Center for Military History. Quotas were set on the basis of population, which at this time amounted to about 4.5 million for the settler population.
