US Army: 24th Infantry Division (Mechanized) Order of Battle - Jan-Mar 1991
v.1.0 April 15, 2001
This article is by Mr. Roger W. Houston.
The 24th Infantry Division was stationed at Ft Stewart,GA in early 1990. The division was the heavy element of the XVIII Airborne Corps at Ft Bragg, NC. In August 1990, the order was given to deploy the unit to Saudi Arabia in response to Iraq's occupation of Kuwait. The division boarded its heavy tanks and equipment aboard all 8 fast sealift ships in the U.S. inventory at the Port of Savannah, GA. Being that the division had two active ground maneuver brigades rounded out by a third National Guard brigade, the army decided to deploy the 197th Infantry Brigade from Ft. Benning in the Guard unit's place. The division took up defensive positions along the Kuwaiti border and waited on an Iraqi incursion into Saudi . In November, upon the orders from Central Command, the division prepared itself for offensive action to expel the Iraqi invaders from Kuwait as part of an Allied coalition the likes not seen since World War II. This is what the 24th ID was made up of on G-Day FEB 26 1991 when it crossed the Line of Departure and traveled into destiny as the most lethal and fastest ground combat formation in history: VICTORY! FIRST TO FIGHT!
