Note

-         The 2nd Division is nicknamed “Indian Head”

-         The 3rd Division took the nickname “Rock of the Marne” and bears it to this day; the division’s 9th Regiment also uses the same nickname. The nickname is sometimes written as “Rock of the Marne!”.

-         The 26th Division was recruited from New England and has the nickname “Yankee”. It was the first National Guard division formed and the first to deploy as a division to France (elements of 1st Division preceded it).

-         The 28th Division was recruited from Pennsylvania and has the nickname “Keystone”, which is the state’s nickname

-         The 42nd Division was recruited from New York and is called “Rainbow”; we were told decades ago that the nickname reflected the multi-ethnic nature of New York City’s population, but apparently, the division took men from many parts of the country and that is the origin of the nickname.

-         The 32nd Division (“Red Arrow”, Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard units) arrived in France as a replacement unit along with the 41st (“Sunset”) Division; the shortage of troops after the big German spring offensives led France to appeal to the United States to speed up its induction of troops into the front line and this division was redesignated for combat.

A Note on the Rainbow Division

The 42nd Infantry (Rainbow) Division's history as a unit began with America's entry into World War I. Amidst the rush by America to mobilize, individual states competed with each other for the honor to be the first to send their National Guard units to fight in the trenches of Europe. To check the negative implications of this competition and to minimize the impact the mobilization could have upon any one state, the government decided to create a division composed of hand picked National Guard units from 26 states and the District of Columbia. As a result of this unified effort, the 42nd Infantry Division was born in August and organized in September 1917 at Camp Mills on Long Island, New York

Colonel Douglas MacArthur, who had been instrumental in the forming of the Division, said shortly after its completion. "The 42nd Division stretches like a Rainbow from one end of America to the other."
