Note 1: This Scharnhost and Gneisenau are predecessors of the famous World War II battleships. They fought at Coronel and then the Falklands, being both lost on December 8, 1914.

Note 2:  This Panther is the one famous from the Agadir Crisis 1911. [Conway says 1906, but in that year, only the conference was held that led to the Agadir Crisis.] First four China station; could sail entire navigable length of the major rivers. Scuttled at Tsingtao on outbreak of World War I. Last two for West African service.

Note 3: Eighty-two older torpedo boats were still in service in 1906.  The ones listed had displacements equal to destroyers of the time, but were named torpedo boats because of their role.
