The Bengal Army in 1857
v.1.0 April
7, 2002
Major A.H.
Amin
British experts like Michael
Edwardes and many other “Bhagwans” and “Thekedars” made highly exaggerated statements about Sepoy
strength in 1857. Edwardes managed to fit 30,000 people in the 600 yards
position (as shown by British Official Map of the battle in Forrest’s Mutiny
Papers) at Battle of Badli Ki Serai fought a little north of Delhi in 1857! It
was difficult thus to calculate Sepoy strength and it took the author about two
decades to arrive at an assessment .The exercise involved two distinct
activities i.e calculating through tables and visualizing the process through
hypothetical maps.
[In this context, the use of the
word “Bhagwan”, i.e., holy one, means a gray eminence. “Thekedar”, i.e., a
contractor, is used dismissively to indicate those Indians who uncritically
accepted the British estimates of the number of rebels. In all fairness,
however, the type of analysis Major Amin has done on the Indian Mutiny – and
this is one example - is immensely difficult. It is beyond the competence of a
purely civil historian; the subcontinent has few military historians, and even
fewer are military historians familiar with Indian military history prior to
the 20th Century. Editor.]
