India p.4

This special high-altitude warfare force of 7 battalions is not counted as part of India’s Special Forces as it is specific to the China border. This despite the SFF being a commando force. It operates in company-sized units for screening and reconnaissance. Its origins are traced back to the CIA trained 22 Establishment set up for infiltration missions into Tibet, in the wake of the 1962 War. While it no longer undertakes such missions, the capability remains.

The troops are parachute qualified, and battalions consist of six companies
