GDP $3.4-trillion 2011

Budget ~$41-billion 2011

Personnel  90,000 planned as German armed Force reduce from 250,000 to 163,000 by 2013; plus 15,000 reserve. Reduced from 160,000 in 2007 and 350,000 in 1989. Draft ends July 2011.

75,000 civilians (all services)

The army has gone through yet another reduction, this time to 9 brigades, allegedly to have a more ready force.  Yet, the Army finds it difficult to field even one brigade for overseas duty. Further cuts are anticipated.

Conscription

9-months: six months basic training, remaining three months to be completed over three years. Conscripts can ask to have their terms extended to 23 months, but only for overseas missions. Conscripts can ask at any time to be made into regulars. In 2007, 67,000 were conscripted (all services).
