Organization
From the mid 1950s until the early 1980s, the country
was divided into four Military Zones, covering respectively, the
north-central region, the northwestern coastal region, the
southern region and the jungle region of the east.
The Ist,
IInd, and IVth Zones
were each garrisoned by a nominal Division, each of which
consisted of only one Brigade and support units in peacetime,
the IIIrd Zone containing three nominal Divisions. There were
also both a Cavalry and a Special Forces Brigade outside the
divisional structure. In the early 1980s the divisional
organization was largely abandoned, only the three-brigade
strong Ist TARQUI Infantry Division remaining in the IVth
Military Zone. The Army then consisted of a total of five
Infantry, one Armoured, one Special Forces and three Jungle
Brigades. In the mid 1990s each Military Zone became an Army
Division and an Artillery, an Army Aviation, an Engineer and a
Logistic Support Brigade were formed. This arrangement remains
in force.
The
Brigades are not numbered consecutively and carry odd numbers in
the series 1 to 27.
As this
orbat is unusually detailed, we provide a summary of battalions
and of the brigade assignments to divisions
