Notes

Almost all maps are from the CIA Factbook, which is in the public domain. Other maps are attributed to their source.

GDP figures are from the same source. Nonetheless, readers should avoid attributing precision to the data, and use them only as a general guide.

Both because of the global recession 2008-10 and the drop in oil prices from previous highs, in almost all cases we have taken the 2010 GDP to be the same as for 2009. This may overstate some nations’ GDP.

Similarly, in most cases defense expenditures are approximations intended only for a general picture.

For helicopter figures, in most cases we have relied on www.milavia.com to provide consistency in references. As with all equipment data, the figures in CWA 2010 should be solely treated as a guide.

Equipment figures as given in all publicaly available sources are generally circular repeats of data that may or may not be realiable. Some countries, usually western ones, publish equipment holdings. But most countries do not and equipment holdings are guesses presented to the reader as accurate. We have to some extent avoided this problem by giving approximations from our own sources for several countries.
