Organization

Background

In Cold War time the Land Forces incorporated three armies – 1st Army HQ Sofia, 2nd Army HQ Plovdiv and 3rd Army HQ Sliven. In wartime the Supreme Land Forces Command would turn into Front (group of armies) Command. In 1996 the armies were reduced to corps. On June 1st 2003 Bulgarian Land Forces switched to commands structure, leaving corps behind. Many designations and chains of command were changed.

The latest plan is known as Vision 2015 and calls for major cuts. All the commands will be deactivated by Dec 31, 2006 and the units will be commanded directly by Land Forces Chief Headquarters.

For first time we try to present the official numerical system of designations. Each and every unit has 5 digits number - Detachment XXXXX. Please keep in mind that Bulgarian Armed Forces are reluctant to reveal the full list of designations and units behind them. All the information is gathered from open sources and mistakes are possible.
